Qiz Qalasi / Maiden Tower / Landmark, Baku, Azerbaijan, in the bay of Caspian sea

Early medieval round tower, 8 storeys, 30 m height, 15 m diameter, 5 m thick walls, inside core 7th century, building activity until 13th century.

The Qiz Qalasi, known as the Maiden Tower, is located in the south-eastern part of Icherisheher, the old town of Baku, which is still partially walled today. It is probably part of the former city fortifications.

Bastion, observatory, zoroastric fire-temple, lighthouse? For none of this possible dedications are definitely proofs. Many facts pointing into the dedication as impregnable bastion, which could be named as virgin.
